Noise-induced hearing loss - Helpful Tips

Nearly 1 in 5 American teenagers are expected to acquire hearing loss largely due to overexposure of loud sounds.

Over 30 million U.S. workers are exposed to hazardous noise levels on the job.

25% of Americans age 65-74 and nearly 50% of those 75+ have disabling hearing loss

Approximately two-thirds of service members and veterans have NIHL or tinnitus, or both

Many veterans also have processing disorders as a result of blast or high noise exposure

The measures needed to prevent NIHL are simple

Musicians are 57% more likely to experience tinnitus and are almost four times more likely to develop NIHL than the general public. The sound onstage can reach up to 110 decibels (dB), the equivalent of a jackhammer. Prolonged exposure to loud noise causes hair cells of the inner ear to be damaged, leading to permanent hearing loss.

A portable listening device at maximum volume (105 dB) is louder than heavy city traffic, drills, noisy subway platform and equal to a table saw. Blasting the volume in earbuds hurts hearing. It is estimated that 20% of teenagers, an age group that frequently uses portable listening devices, will suffer from hearing loss from overexposure to noise. (hearinghealthfoundation.org)

How do you use the Utility Tip?
Apply to the ear and use the finger grips to gently twist and pull out ear wax. The Utility Tip is going to feel firm at first. Please use very delicate pressure only. Being rigid is what helps the Utility Tip work. It pulls wax out instead of packing it in the canal like cotton swabs.

Is the Utility Tip safe?
Yes, use as directed on the packaging.

Are Utility Tips like cotton swabs?
The Utility Tip looks similar to a cotton swab but is made out of plastic, so it will feel very different. The Utility Tip is designed for maximum ear wax removal.

Can I use the Utility Tip on my kids and pets?
Yes, follow the directions on the packaging and use the Utility Tip on yourself first to know how much pressure to apply.  Keep out of reach of children.

How much pressure should I apply?
This will depend on the person, start with a very delicate pressure and increase as desired.

Can I make the Utility Tip more flexible?
Yes, place under warm water for 30 seconds to relax the material.

Will the Utility Tip hurt?
The Utility Tip is different than what you are used to so there may be a learning curve to knowing what works for you, use multiple times to get the hang of it.
